If high-powered
RIBs and sportsboats leave you cold, the Cove 16 built by the Salcombe
Launch Company will warm the cockles of your heart. With traditional styling
derived from an original 1930’s design, the 5 metre Cove 16 launch
oozes charm and classic beauty. What’s more, she’s custom built
to order using modern materials and is powered by an inboard diesel engine
that delivers incredible economy.
At displacement
speeds the Cove 16 has superb directional stability, produces minimal wash
and is easy to manoeuvre in any conditions. She’s ideal for estuary
pottering, fishing, picnicking and exploring, and her nicely proportioned
displacement hull copes well with a choppy sea. With strength, seaworthiness
and reliability all built-in, the Cove 16 really is a multi-purpose boat
that’s equally at home in a commercial or workboat role as she is
in a recreational one.
Everything
on the boat is neat, solid and well designed. There’s a high freeboard
and a spacious deep interior. The hull and deck are hand-laid glass-reinforced
polyester built to a heavy-duty specification, while the bulkheads, stringers
and floor are marine plywood encapsulated in fibre glass. The voids below
the floor are foam filled and the keel and beaching keels are resin filled.
The launch
is powered by either a 13.5 hp (2 cylinders) or 20 hp (3 cylinders) Beta
Marine freshwater cooled diesel engine driving a fixed 3 blade propeller.
The 13.5 hp version gives a top speed of around 7 knots while the 20 hp
version will top out at closer to 8.5 knots. Good sound insulation and
excellent engine access is afforded by a GRP moulded engine compartment
cover.
The Cove 16 is built to order and each boat can be personalised with variations of almost any nature.
